The Black Peace Officers Association (BPOA) was established in the late 1980s by a group of dedicated men and women who recognized the importance of unity, preparation, and opportunity within the Sheriff’s Department.
Their mission was clear: ensure that African American deputies were fully prepared to navigate their careers, understand the promotional process, and gain the experience necessary to qualify for specialized assignments and leadership roles.
From the beginning, BPOA also recognized two essential responsibilities:
Recruiting qualified individuals into the law enforcement profession
Building positive, lasting relationships with the communities we serve
Today, BPOA continues that commitment — fostering mentorship, professional development, leadership advancement, and community engagement for the next generation of peace officers.

We support the recruitment, preparation, and promotion of qualified African American deputies within public service agencies.
Members gain access to mentorship, training opportunities, and guidance through the promotional process and specialized units.
We foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the communities we serve through outreach, service, and leadership.
